As previously reported, the Tony Awards Administration Committee determined that Best Sound Design of a Play and Best Sound Design of a Musical Categories would be eliminated from the established list of competitive categories, beginning with the 2014-2015 season. The Tony Administration Committee may bestow a Special Tony Award to a production when it determines that extraordinary sound design has been achieved.

In response to the decision, and as previously reported, sound designer John Gromada, who was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Sound Design of a Play for 2013’s revival of The Trip to Bountiful, has started an online petition to reverse the Committee’s ruling.

Gromada’s petition, posted on thepetitionsite.com, reads as follows:

Sound Design is a theatrical design art that is a critical part of the collaborative art of theatre. The American Theatre Wing should continue to honor excellence in sound design as it does for scenery, costume and lighting design, and as it has done since 2008. Sound designers are an important part of the theatrical community whose vital contributions cannot be ignored or dismissed. Reverse this decision now!

The petition, which has currently garnered over 26,913 signatures, can be viewed here. The number is quickly growing- especially with the help of Broadway stars who have taken to twitter in support of sound designers

Going to reblog this once again. They changed the category of their Facebook page so we can no longer leave reviews. They also have been removing negative comments. Really, an embarrassing and cowardly move on their part. (But it does indicate that we are being heard, at least.)

Here are a few more links:

amimyresume:

An unfortunate stereotype emerges from some college and amateur theater programs that stage managers must rule with iron fists, must essentially act like jerks to keep the childish actors in line. But in a recent series of telephone conversations with some of LA’s top stage managers, it becomes clear that intimidation and rudeness are the antithesis of successful theatrical collaboration.

Also, congratulations to Derek McLane for another stunning set. (He did last year’s scenic design as well.) We will be keeping an eye out for an interview and hopefully some design renderings!

(And here’s hoping Disney will ask him to design Frozen if/when it comes to the stage!)

STAGE TUBE: Broadway Responds to Russian Government

The Russian Government recently shut down all theatrical performances, deeming them to be homosexual propaganda. Outraged, Russian Broadway came together and decided to respond in a witty performance. In the video below they discuss issues of love and sexuality, as well as social constraints and stereotypes.

The performance was directed by John Walton West and composed by Jason Michael Snow. The cast included a wide array of stars, including Jennifer Barnhart, Laura Benanti, Chirstina Bianco, Stephanie J. Block, Danny Burstein, Michael Cerveris, Joanna Gleason, Christine Pedi, Michael Rosen, Stephen Schwartz, and many more.
